Partners in Road Construction Safety Supports Distracted Driving Law

(firmenpresse) - EDMONTON, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 08/31/11 -- The Partners in Road Construction Safety hopes the distracted driver legislation effective September 1 will go even further toward helping keep workers safe in road construction zones.

With the new law, Heidi Harris-Jensen, Chair of Partners in Road Construction Safety (PIRCS) hopes all drivers will practice safe driving habits, especially in construction zones. "We understand that construction can cause delays and create frustration with motorists," says Harris-Jensen. "However; as children return to school, there will be more motorists on the road and given the wet summer weather, road and utility workers will be in full force, working to complete construction projects before the end of the season. Please be alert for other hazards even if you don't see workers or equipment. With the completion of construction projects, all Albertans will have better roads to travel on in the future."

To help ease drivers' frustrations, the PIRCS website and Twitter account (dontRIPab) feature road construction locations and safety tips. Motorists are encouraged to check the Twitter feed before leaving their home or office to prepare for the trip ahead and to enable them to take alternate routes.

The province-wide PIRCS's mandate is to reduce collisions that occur every year in road and utility construction and maintenance sites in Alberta. The group has been reminding drivers to be cautious in construction zones since 2003, with the well-known slogan "Don't RIP Through Construction Zones". "It's important for us to do the campaign each year, considering the province's population and traffic are increasing every year," explains Harris- Jensen. "There are new Albertans on our roads each year, and we want to make sure we reach them."

PIRCS partners include Alberta Transportation, the Alberta Construction Safety Association, the City of Edmonton, the Alberta Roadbuilders and Heavy Construction Association, City of St. Albert, Strathcona County, EPCOR, Edmonton Police Service and Alberta Employment and Immigration (WorkSafe Alberta).
