Canada's Labour Minister Acknowledges the Important Role of Canadian Workers

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 09/05/11 -- Today, Canadians are celebrating Labour Day, a tradition that has been observed for over 115 years. On this occasion, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Minister of Labour, expressed her appreciation to workers across the country for their contribution to the well-being and prosperity of Canada.
"Labour Day gives us a chance to recognize Canadian workers and to thank them for their efforts and hard work," said Minister Raitt. "Canadian workers contribute greatly to our nation's economic growth and competitiveness."
Labour Day was first celebrated in New York on September 5, 1882 to acknowledge the important role workers play in the health and strength of the economy. In 1894, the Government of Canada officially designated the first Monday of September of each year as Labour Day. "Today, celebrating Labour Day is more important than ever as workers are the main reason why Canada is a strong and competitive country", added Minister Raitt. That is why the Government of Canada, through the Labour Program, strives to enhance protection for workers and to promote respect for fundamental labour standards and workers rights.
