What to Expect at Your First Optician Appointment

What to Expect at Your First Optician Appointment

ID: 650919

Made an appointment with an optician to have a local eye test and get fitted for glasses? Here’s what you can expect for those who’ve never been.

(firmenpresse) - If you’re heading off to the optician down the road for your first ever local eye test, you’d be forgiven for wondering exactly what it is you might be in for. Even though most people understand there’s nothing to be worried about, for first-timers it can help to know what to expect.

It’s super important that if you’ve made an appointment to have a local eye test you don’t put it off, particularly if you’re having any issues. So, without any further delay, here’s what to expect at your first routine optician appointment to get your first pair of spectacles.

Consider Some Preparation

Particularly now, when the focus is on hygiene, in order to reduce the time spent in store after your local eye test, you might want to get a jump start on the choice of frames on offer. Check out the optometrist’s website and research the brands, styles and colours they have so you have a basic idea of what you might like.

Diagnostic Testing

Once you’ve arrived for your appointment, depending on the size of the business, either a trained assistant or your optician will conduct the diagnostic testing to determine your prescription and identify any abnormalities. The equipment can vary from place to place, but generally the tests will comprise of:

?Measuring the internal pressure of your eyes
?Measuring the thickness and curve of the surface of your eyes
?A 3-D scan of the back of your eye

The Consultation

After the diagnostic testing you’ll have a consultation in which the optician will ask you a series of questions. These will include things about your family history, lifestyle and any issues you are currently experiencing with your vision.

He or she will then perform a refraction test to determine the health of your eyes, which involves checking the front and back of the eyes with a high-powered lens (microscope). They will be looking for things like scratches or any other kinds of problems on the iris, cornea and lens.

Depending on your situation, they may also perform a visual field test to check your peripheral vision, or some additional tests to be able to complete a thorough examination should any issues be considered.

Choosing your Frames

Now comes the fun part – choosing the frames for your new glasses. When you realise the choice you’re faced with, you’ll be pleased if you’ve done some research beforehand. Choosing frames is not something you should attempt to do on your own, so it’s a great idea to enlist the opinion of a trusted friend to come along with you. The assistant at the opticians will also be a huge help, because not only will they be very familiar with the stock, but they’ll also be able to help in terms of selecting frames that suit your face shape, personality and lifestyle. Try on as many pairs as you can in order to get a feel for comfort, fit and how they look, of course!

While every place is different, your new glasses should be ready within a few days to a week of your local eye test. When you collect them you’ll go through a fit process and they will be adjusted on the spot, if needs be.

Maintaining your vision by updating your prescription regularly is vital, which is why building a good relationship with your local optician is so important. Consider your visits part of your overall health and you’ll stay on top of any potential problems.
