Cheese to Please on a Burgundy Barge Holiday in France

France is not just about the wine! These fantastic cheeses of Burgundy are a highlight of any barge holiday in France.

(firmenpresse) - With so much to see and do on a European break it can be difficult to pick a destination. However, choosing a barge holiday in France provides you with a way to see a number of wonderful places and attractions, sample the cuisine of an amazing country and enjoy a journey through stunning countryside.

There are a number of regions that are perfect for a barge holiday. In France you’d be hard pushed to find a better destination than Burgundy, loved the world over by fans of its famous wine. However, it’s not just the wine that should appeal about this delightful area: the cheese is every bit as good – and pairs fantastically! These are some of the very best varieties that Burgundy has to offer.

C?teaux

You may not have heard of C?teaux, with its relative obscurity being one of the main reasons to seek it out on your barge holiday. In France, monastic cheeses are well regarded, and this soft, strong tasting variety really upholds the reputation. Made by a group of monks who churn out a few hundred wheels every fortnight, the exclusivity of this cheese makes it one for every cheese lover’s bucket list.

Cancoillotte

A rich melted cheese that dates back 2000 years, this variety is strong and pungent and worth a taste on any barge holiday in France that takes in the Burgundy region. Perhaps more than any other, it pairs well with the area’s wine – in fact, slowly warming it with wine and garlic before letting it luxuriously ooze over potatoes is a preferred way to enjoy it!

Charolais

A goat’s milk offering, this one is versatile in many senses. Not least the ages at which it can be enjoyed. It provides different but equally enjoyable flavours at young, half-mature or mature age. It’s one of the most loved of all of Burgundy’s goat’s milk cheeses and for good reason. Historically, it dates from a time in which the land was primarily used for rearing goats and the centuries since have really helped perfect it.

Comté

Perhaps one of the most famous from the region, Comté is a hard variety that will never give you exactly the same experience twice. It matures for 120 days and in this time you can expect a number of flavour profiles to develop – from milky to spicy, it’s got the potential to really blow you away. It comes in a large wheel and a number of different stamps, depending on when and where it was made. Trying a bit of each and selecting a favourite to bring home is a must!

Cheese Lovers Paradise

With so much delectable cheese to choose from, you’ll be in heaven sampling all the different types. Bringing some home is also definitely a great way to remember your barge holiday in France. It’s always a good idea to book these trips with a reputable tour operator as a way to ensure you get to experience the highlights that really appeal to you. Their specialist knowledge can make your trip everything you’ve dreamed it should be.
