ID: 653813

Can’t decide what to order on holiday at a restaurant? Cinque Terre has local delights that will excite everybody’s taste buds!

(firmenpresse) - One of the first things that people think about when they book themselves a trip to Italy is the food. It is, quite simply, world class cuisine and it suits every conceivable budget and palate. You can expect very different things, however, depending on the region you’re heading to. The landscapes of different parts of the country make Italy a fantastic place for a culinary adventure, with something delicious and unexpected in practically every restaurant. Cinque Terre is no exception to this, with the five towns having their own local specialities to get the taste buds going.

Here are some of the top things to eat, and the best places to try them!

Pesto

Many people think first and foremost of Genoa when it comes to all matters pesto. However, the whole region (Liguria) is famed for its exceptionally tasty basil production, and you’ll find it on the menu of every restaurant. Cinque Terre is a great place to sample different kinds of pesto and you shouldn’t miss trying it on gnocchi for a traditional delight. It’s also a great idea to stock up on some jars of your favourite variety to bring home with you.

Lemons

You’ll smell their strong, familiar fragrance before you see them, but lemons are everywhere in the area and you’ll find them on basically every part of a menu. The region is famous for using lemon in desserts and liqueurs, so it’s worth giving these a try when you’re there.

Olive Oil

What’s something you’ll find on the table in every restaurant? Cinque Terre produces a lot of olive oil, and for very good reason. The conditions in the area are ideal to grow world-leading olives, and oil production here is so highly regarded that it has the famous D.O.P. (Protected Designation of Origin) label that only the most prized ingredients get. Whether it’s a drizzle over a salad, or a dip for delectable bread, the olive oil will certainly leave a fantastic flavour in your mouth.

Anchovies

These salty little delights aren’t always for everybody but they’re better here than pretty much anywhere else – so if you’re not sure whether you like them, it’s worth trying again! They’re eaten in a variety of ways, one of which includes with olive oil and lemon (two of the other key flavours of the area). It’s an authentic taste of Liguria and should be on any foodie’s list.

Where to go?

Depending where in the area you find yourself, you’re never far away from a fantastic restaurant. Cinque Terre is known for its views, and perhaps the finest dining/viewing experience is to be found at Trattoria Dal Billy – a seafood specialist that gives diners views out over glistening azure seas. Fans of culinary elegance should check out Rio Bistrot in Riomaggiore, and a top tip for pasta lovers (think lots of pesto!) is Ristorante Ciak, in Monterosso.

Foodie Heaven

It’s known more for spectacular views, but thankfully people are starting to see Cinque Terre for the dining destination that it is. You’ll find all sorts of Italian produce on the menus here and plenty of local fare. The hardest part will be fitting enough meals in!
