ID: 653814

Visit Italy’s most beautiful village: Vernazza! Cinque Terre is high on our travel bucket lists, but if you only have time for one place, this is where to go.

(firmenpresse) - It’s easy to see why the Cinque Terre is one of the ultimate destinations for visitors travelling to Italy. The charming fishing villages that huddle on the country’s beautiful coastline are some of the most picturesque in the country, if not the world. Plus, they offer incredible scenery, great hiking routes and a long and fascinating history. There really is something for everyone!

While each one has its own charm, it’s the Cinque Terre village, Vernazza, that arguably captures the most hearts. With its unique characteristics, such as its very own natural harbour, it would be hard to find somewhere more picturesque and ambient. So remember to keep your camera at the ready, because you won’t want to miss this!

A Bit of History

The town of Vernazza in the Cinque Terre dates back to around 1000 AD when it was used as an important base for an influential family. You should be able to spot the crumbling remnants of the old fortifications as you wander around the village. One that you must visit is the medieval castle, Belforte, which was built to protect the residents from pirates.

For about 200 years after this period, the village was an important point for ships and soldiers and turned out to be key in Genoa’s conquest of the Ligurian coast and beyond. You won’t witness any naval battles today, but there’s no doubt that the best way to bask in the region’s beauty is by sea. So, why not jump on a boat tour and immerse yourself in the area’s history?

Highlights to See

Explore on Foot

Not only is Vernazza in the Cinque Terre a stop on some great hiking trails along the Ligurian coast, but its winding streets promise stunning surprises around every turn. There is no better way to get to know a place like this than to go for a wander and you’ll stumble upon quaint local restaurants, beautiful buildings and, of course, spectacular sea views!

Historical Landmarks

As you’d expect, a place with so much history has plentiful ruins to discover. Here are a few must-sees.

- The Doria Castle
Built as protection from pirates in the Middle Ages, this castle offers a peaceful respite from the bustling harbour below. Sat upon the hillside, you’ll be treated to incredible views and an interesting perspective of the town itself.

- The Church of Satan Margherita di Antiochia
This stunning early fourteenth-century church is a wonderful display of the gothic Ligurian style. If you want to learn a bit about local tradition make time to visit this spot.

How to Get There

The Cinque Terre village of Vernazza is very popular and therefore quite easy to get to. But do remember that this is a no-car zone, so either taking the train or organising a tour is the best way to visit.

So, do you fancy ticking the most beautiful town in Italy off your travel bucket list? Then what are you waiting for? Get booking and yourself to Vernazza!
