(firmenpresse) - SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/13/11 -- The Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, today took part in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Transportation and Energy Minister's Conference. The Conference kicked off a week of meetings and events for Minister Oliver in California aimed at showcasing Canada as a global energy leader and a secure and reliable supplier of energy resources and clean energy technology solutions. The Minister met with Seishu Makino, Japan's Senior Vice Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Jose Rene D. Almendras, the Philippines' Secretary of Energy, and Steven Chu, U.S. Secretary of Energy.

The meeting with Energy Secretary Chu provided Minister Oliver with an opportunity to follow up on their recent meeting on July 29 in Washington, D.C., on key issues of mutual interest including cooperation related to advancing the Clean Energy Dialogue and the Keystone XL pipeline.

At the APEC Conference, Minister Oliver highlighted Canada's integrated approach to the transition to a low carbon transport sector: "Canada's answer is one that addresses the efficiency of vehicles, improves transport systems and, importantly, diversifies the transportation sector's energy sources through increased use of alternative fuels and electric vehicles."

"APEC has long recognized that economic growth and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region are inextricably linked to the security of energy supplies," said Minister Oliver. "Canada's energy resources place it in a unique position to help ensure energy security of those well beyond our borders. Beyond merely the scale of our energy resources lies the fact that Canada is a safe and reliable supplier of energy."

APEC's primary goal is to support sustainable economic growth and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region by championing free and open trade and investment, promoting and accelerating regional economic integration, encouraging economic and technical cooperation, enhancing human security, and facilitating a favourable and sustainable business environment.

Following the APEC Conference, the ministers will release an action agenda to move APEC toward an efficient, sustainable, low-carbon transport future.
