Minister Duncan Congratulates Saddle Lake First Nation on the Grand Opening of a New Water Treatment Plant
(firmenpresse) - SADDLE LAKE FIRST NATION, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/14/11 -- The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, today congratulated Saddle Lake First Nation on the opening of its new state-of-the-art water treatment plant.
"Our Government is strongly committed to working with First Nations to address the important issue of safe drinking water," said Minister Duncan. "This project will create real and tangible long term benefits for the community of Saddle Lake First Nation."
The new water treatment plant will use an advanced treatment process known as a reverse osmosis membrane system that will minimize chemical use, and will ensure the facility meets the latest water quality protocols. This project was made possible due to the combined investment of $13 million from and the Department's First Nations Water and Wastewater Action Plan (FNWWAP).
By the end of 2013, the Government of Canada will have invested approximately $2.5 billion in water and wastewater infrastructure for First Nation communities since 2006. The Government will continue to work with First Nations to invest in infrastructure, monitoring and capacity.
The Government of Canada remains committed to the development of legislation to support the creation of enforceable standards that will address the provision of safe drinking water, effective treatment of wastewater and protection of sources of drinking water in First Nation communities.
Saddle Lake First Nation is located approximately 180 kilometres northeast of Edmonton. The First Nation's on-reserve population of 6033 makes it Alberta's second most populous First Nation.
