CanNor Invests In Nunavut Tourism Strategy
(firmenpresse) - IQALUIT, NUNAVUT -- (Marketwire) -- 09/14/11 -- The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) and Minister of Health today announced federal support for the creation of a long-term strategy to encourage tourism growth across Nunavut.
"The Government of Canada is proud to support the expansion of Nunavut's tourism industry," said Minister Aglukkaq. "By involving Inuit and industry in the development of a comprehensive tourism strategy those participating in traditional economies can more fully benefit from tourism dollars."
"Tourism builds on community strengths, fosters pride in our culture and languages, and has the potential to bring real economic benefits to communities," said the Honourable Peter Taptuna, Nunavut's Minister of Economic Development and Transportation. "Our partnership with CanNor will produce a tourism strategy that will guide investment, build capacity, and help industry provide world-class, authentic travel experiences."
The Government of Nunavut's Department of Economic Development and Transportation (ED&T) will receive $495,000 over three years from CanNor to develop a comprehensive strategy focused on tourism products and services across the territory. The strategy will enhance the marketing of Nunavut as a world-class tourist destination, and create employment and economic opportunities for Nunavummiut.
This investment is made possible through CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) initiative, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity building in all three territories.
SINED is one of several economic development initiatives within CanNor. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada's economic development across the North, and for related policy development, research and advocacy.
