New Comedy Offers Opportunity to Raise Awareness About Young Adult Cancer and Connect Survivors to LIVESTRONG's Free Resources

(firmenpresse) - WASHINGTON, DC -- (Marketwire) -- 09/15/11 -- ® partnered with actor/producer Seth Rogen and screenwriter and cancer survivor Will Reiser to host a special screening of the highly acclaimed new film on Wed., Sept. 14 at the AMC Lowes Georgetown 14 multiplex theater. Following the screening, LIVE President and CEO moderated a lively Q & A session with Rogen, Reiser and the audience of young adult cancer advocates and experts.

Presented by Summit Entertainment in association with Mandate Pictures, 50/50 offers a comedic account of a 27-year-old guy's cancer diagnosis and subsequent battle to beat the disease in this new film directed by Jonathan Levine and produced by Rogen. Inspired by personal experiences, including that of the film's writer (Reiser), 50/50 is an original story about friendship, love, survival and finding humor in unlikely places starring Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard and Angelica Huston. 50/50 made its world premiere at the on Tues., Sept. 13 and received a standing ovation. The film's U.S. premiere is in New York on Mon., Sept. 26 and opens nationwide on Fri., Sept. 30.

"As a three-time young adult cancer survivor, I owe a personal debt of gratitude to Will, Seth and Jonathan for making this film," said Ulman. "With 50/50, they have drawn attention to a demographic that has long been forgotten in oncology and are also destigmatizing cancer by sharing their stories with the disease. I hope this film serves as a turning point for how Hollywood depicts cancer and that we begin to see more storylines about people surviving and thriving with cancer."

"What a lot of people will find really shocking about 50/50 is that it is really funny," said Heidi Adams, LIVE's Senior Director of Grassroots Engagement and co-author of "Planet Cancer: The Frequently Bizarre Yet Always Informative Experiences and Thoughts of Your Fellow Natives," an irreverent cancer guidebook for young adults. "But the humor is what makes it a rock-solid portrayal of the young adult cancer experience. It's a powerful coping tool that many young adults use to regain control in incredibly disempowering circumstances. And, honestly, there are just a lot of absurd things that happen, when you just have to laugh in an 'I can't believe that just happened' kind of way."

Each year, nearly 70,000 young adults between the ages of 15 and 40 are diagnosed with cancer. In contrast to those younger and older, survival rates for young adults have barely increased since 1975, possibly due to factors such as lack of insurance, less participation in clinical trials and delayed diagnoses. Also, young survivors often are caught between the worlds of pediatric and adult oncology. They may face a variety of unique long-term effects that will need to be addressed over their lifetimes, such as reentry into school or the workforce, insurance coverage issues, infertility as a result of treatment, neurocognitive effects or secondary malignancies.

Beginning in 2006, LIVE with the National Cancer Institute took action to raise awareness and effect positive change for young adults with cancer by establishing the , a coalition of more than 160 organizations around the world. LIVE also provides support to young adults with cancer through its initiative , an online community of peer support and advocacy, and its .
