The company features in a report published by ChemSec andClean Production Action, "Greening Consumer Electronics: Moving Awayfrom Bromine and Chlorine", which profiles seven leading companies inthe electronics industry that have engineered environmental solutionsto negate the need for using brominated and chlorinated chemicals intheir products.Sony Ericsson mobile phones include an industry leading 'green core'- the result of the company's long standing commitment to eliminatethe use of hazardous chemicals from the product design andmanufacturing process. By implementing a life-cycle approach toproduct development that takes into account design, supply chain,manufacturing, product use and end-of-life treatment, Sony Ericssonhas worked with its partners to phase out unwanted substances. Asearly as 2001, Sony Ericsson started removing brominated flameretardants (BFR) from its products and which are now 99.9% BFR freeand totally PVC free[1]. The company has now shipped over 350 millionBFR-free phones.In June 2009, Sony Ericsson launched two pioneer GreenHeart(TM)products that build on the company's 'green core' and introduce arange of sustainable innovations that will eventually roll out intothe broader portfolio. The two flagship products - the C901GreenHeart(TM) and Naite - and the MH300 GreenHeart (TM) headset, oneof the greenest headsets on the market, underpin Sony Ericsson'scommitment to taking a lead on environmental sustainability bydriving green innovation that doesn't compromise on product designand functionality.
