The Sand Island is one of the Odra’s islands within the Wroclaw‘s historical town, joined to the Old Town and Odra’s left bank with the Sand Bridge (Most Piaskowy). Tumski Bridge links the island with Ostrów Tumski and Mill Bridges (Mosty Młyńskie) provide the connection to the right bank and Mill Island (Wyspa Młyńska). Additionally there is the strolling route that runs from the Sand Island to the Malt Island (Wyspa Słodowa) through the Sand Footbridge (Kładka Piaskowa). The south-west fragment of the island is cut off by the the canal with the Sand Floodgate (Śluza Piaskowa).The name of the island (German Sandinsel, Latin Insula Arena) comes from the Blessed Virgin Mary Church on Sand Island. The whole area of the island is ca. 5 hectars.

Principles of staging for the Wrocław performance of “Othello”: Scenographic conception for selected scenes
The action of “Othello” opera takes place in Cyprus. First scene is the sea battle as seen from the harbor which was the origin of the idea of presenting Verdi’s masterpiece exactly on an island and changing the nearby canals into the port. Traditionally the megaproduction staging will use the natural scenery placing the action in the water, on the Sand Island’s little bridges and the statuette of Mother of God will stand on the top of real tree.
The project does not anticipate the stage instead of which Othello’s castle fortress will be built. This three-floor fortress creating the harbor, the castle, the garden and Desdemona’s chambers will be located on the Odra’s riverside.
The mass of the castle will not block the original panorama of the town and will be linked with the land by the bridge that, according to particular scenes, will change its structure and colour.
Previous stagings of operas on bodies of water by The Wrocław Opera
The cast of the Wrocław Opera has abundant experience in performing grand spectacles set on bodies of water. In 1998, the Wrocław Opera participated in the staging of Tchaikovsky’s ballet “Swan Lake”. The performance took place on a stage with an area of 500 square meters at the Pergola behind the Hala Ludowa in Wrocław. The performance was a great artistic success, and was seen by thousands of delighted music lovers from all over Poland and abroad. The organizers successfully dealt with huge administrative, technical and logistical hurdles in preparing the performance.
In June 2003, the Wrocław Opera staged its next grand performance, Ponchielli’s “Gioconda”. The performance took place on a gargantuan stage shaped like a Venetian gondola floating on the Oder River near Cathedral Island against a impressive backdrop of the most beautiful landmarks in the city. Altogether, almost thirty thousand people attended the six showings of the opera.
Józef Kański, a music critic, writes: The audience came to see a grand operatic spectacle, something that was not really well known in Poland, but was brought to life in Wrocław. The spectacle was performed in a manner similar to performances at festivals in Verona in Italy”. He penned his review under the title “Wrocław: Operatic Verona of the North”. The performance was aired by the Polish National Television Network. The Polish Tourist Board awarded the Wrocław Opera with certificate proclaiming the performance as the “Best Tourist Event of the Year”.
In 2007 the Wroclaw Opera renewed the tradition of Summer Festival on the Water. At Pergola, nerby the Cenenary Hall Michal Znaniecki produced Gaetano Donizetti’s “L’elisir d’amore” on the stage built at the surface of artificial lake. Six performances were seen by over thirty thousand spectators from Poland and abroad. This performance was a great success, receiving the Certificate of the Best Tourist Product 2007 (the prize given by t Polish Tourist Organisation).
SUPERPRODUCTIONS
Each season is crowned by the superproduction in the Centenary Hall (Hala Ludowa) with the audience of 4000 people. These are the largest operatic performances in Poland, among gigantic decorations, with the participation of great European stars, hundreds of performers, supernumeraries and animals on stage. Almost 250 000 people have seen superproductions until 2006. The most entertainment performances are:

Carmina Burana by Carl Orff in 2001 and 2002. Nine spectacles in Centenary Hall with audience of 28 000.
The Haunted manor by Stanislaw Moniuszko in 2001.Six spectacles with audience of 22 000 The Fiddler on the roof in 2002 and 2005. Ten spectacles in Centenary Hall and two at the Dominikanska Gallery with audience of 26 000.
