Vacon equips the world's first diesel-electric main propulsion on
river cruise vessel with AC drives
(Thomson Reuters ONE) - Vacon Group, Press Release, 7 October 2009The global AC drives manufacturer Vacon has delivered AC drives to MVViking Legend, the world's first river cruise vessel featuring adiesel-electric propulsion system.The diesel-electric propulsion system of the vessel makes themaneuverability of the 135-meter-vessel easy on narrow rivers. It isestimated that the vessel achieves a 20% boost in fuel efficiency incomparison to any other river cruising vessel in the region. The shipalso provides a quieter ride for guests by using four smallerpropellers instead of two large propellers. Moreover, both enginerooms have been insulated to further reduce noise and vibration.The MV Viking Legend is the first river cruise vessel in the worldthat is equipped with an integrated propulsion and network system,based solely on inverter-driven asynchronous generators andpropulsion motors. The system uses Vacon's variable-speed AC drives,and asynchronous generators and motors by AEM in Germany."The MV Viking Legend provides several new and remarkable technicalperformance features which will not only significantly reduce fuelconsumption and CO2 and NOx emissions but will also improve themaneuverability of the vessel and minimize cost for maintenance. The required electrical power forpropulsion system and ship's network is provided by three dieselgenerator-sets. These are dimensioned in a way (2 x 1000 kW, 1 x 560kW) that sufficient power for the network and propulsion drives ofthe MV Viking Legend will mostly be provided by two dieselgenerator-sets only.
