Canada Remembers the Battle of Britain

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 09/16/11 -- The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, issued the following statement today regarding the 71st anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
"In 1940, between the months of July and October, the skies of Britain were the scene of a battle that has been regarded as one of the turning points of the Second World War.
"It was the first major campaign to be fought primarily by air forces. Brave Canadians serving with the Royal Air Force and the Royal Canadian Air Force were called upon to fly into battle. Named the Battle of Britain, it was the largest and most sustained aerial bombing campaign to that date. When it became clear that the Royal Air Force could not be defeated, the battle was over and Britain was safe.
"The Battle of Britain stands as more than just a military victory. It marked the first time air power saved a nation. Canadians, alongside British and Allied forces, protected Britain from invasion and paved the way for the liberation of Europe.
"Our Government is working to ensure that the memory and achievements of Canada's Veterans are never forgotten. Today, we remember the Canadian heroes of the Battle of Britain."
