(Thomson Reuters ONE) - (Fornebu, 7 October 2009) A new study demonstrates that increasedadoption of Internet can accelerate business productivity, therebygenerating income, jobs and government revenues in emergingeconomies.A 10 percentage point increase in Internet penetration could increaseGDP by 1 to 2.5 percent, increase new business activities byapproximately 1 percent, and boost total government revenues in somecountries by as much as 8 to 9 percent. These are some of the key findings of a new study conducted by theBoston Consulting Group (BCG) and Telenor Group, which analyses thesocial and economic impact of Internet in emerging economies. Theanalysis was conducted in Bangladesh, Thailand, and Serbia, coveringthree different stages of market maturity in the Telenor Groupmarkets.Internet an engine for growth"This clearly shows that emerging economies have a lot to gain fromthe Internet, both economically and socially," says Jon FredrikBaksaas, President & CEO, Telenor Group. We are expecting strongInternet growth in our markets in the years to come, and hope thatthis information will help emphasise the important ways in which thenet can improve the social and economic conditions of a country,"says Baksaas. The majority of the economic contribution from the Internet will comefrom the increased productivity that users enjoy across businesssectors. The productivity benefits of Internet usage by businesses inemerging economies are expected to increase over time, driven bynetwork externalities as a broader part of society becomes connected.Jon Fredrik Baksaas, President & CEO, Telenor Group launched thestudy at ITU Telecom World 2009 in Geneva this week. The eventattracts top executives and all stakeholders from the globaltelecommunication and information communication sector.Important role in rural developmentThe study also found that the Internet will generate widespreadsocial benefits, for instance in critical areas like healthcare andeducation. By serving as an alternative to traditional infrastructureas e.g roads, the Internet will play a particularly important role inrural development. This can increase and diversify income, increaseaccess to information and essential services, such as banking andgovernment, and enhance lifestyle and entertainment options forpeople regardless of whether they are in urban or rural areas.Growth driven by wireless accessIn most emerging economies, the limitations of the fixed lineinfrastructure pose a challenge to continued Internet growth.Bangladesh, Thailand and Serbia are no exception."In view of the fixed line constraints in these countries, the nextwave of Internet growth is likely to be driven by wireless accesstechnologies," says Knut Haanaes, Managing Partner of BCG in Oslo, who led the analysis."Although the download speeds are limited relative to fixed linetechnologies, wireless compensates for this with its lowerconstruction costs and shorter timeline for rollout," Haanaes adds.More information about the contribution of telecommunications tosociety is available here:http://www.telenor.com/en/news-and-media/fact-sheets/For further information, please contact:Ingrid Schiefloe, Communication Manager in Telenor GroupPhone: +47 951 56 977Email: ingrid.schiefloe(at)telenor.comBoston Consulting Group (BCG)BCG is a global management consulting firm with more than 60 officesaround the world.
