Cost-effective solution delivers fast and accurate positioning data: SIRFstarIVTM based L50 and L30 GPS modules decrease space requirement and reduce power consumption
(PresseBox) - MSC now offers the L50 and L30 embedded GPS modules from Quectel. The modules, which are based on the SIRFstarIVTM chip solution from Cambridge Silicon Radio (CSR), feature an extremely compact size (28 mm x 16 mm x 3 mm for the L50 and 9 mm x 9 mm x 1.6 mm for the L30) and low current consumption of only 38 mA (L50) / 36 mA (L30) during tracking. The L50 module is additionally equipped with an integrated patch antenna that is designed for a bandwidth of 10 MHz.
The SIRFstarIVTM device is equipped with a anti-jamming filter with which up to eight different signal interferences in the GPS frequency band can be simultaneously completely suppressed or at least extenuated. At the same time, the module supports various satellite-based correction systems such as EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service) and WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System).
Thanks to these functions, the outstanding cold start sensitivity of -148 dBm, tracking sensitivity of -163 dBm, 48 PRN channels and the integrated self-assisted CGEE (Client Generated Extended Ephemeris), the module is able to take a quick and exact position even if the satellite signals are weak. Typically a warm start (with CGEE) can be completed within 10 seconds and a hot start within 1 second.
The self-assisted CGEE, which can temporarily store satellite or localization data of the last three days in an EEPROM, not only supports a quick positioning but also helps the user to save costs since the CGEE capture, other than the previous conventional capture of localization data via base station, is free of charge.
Possible application areas of the L50 and L30 embedded GPS modules include typical applications such as vehicle tracking, personal tracking, asset tracking and mobile weather stations but above all space and cost-sensitive industrial GPS applications where low power consumption and high reliability are required.
