INFORUM is teaming up with Levi Strauss & Co. for the first time to throw a PechaKucha event aimed to answer a crucial question of our time: How can we design a sustainable future?
In a distinctive presentation format called PechaKucha, each speaker will present 20 images with 20 seconds each. This simple presentation format was devised in Tokyo by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Klein Dytham architecture in 2003. This method has been used by people all around the world to view quick, concise and interesting presentations.
is co-founder, publisher and now Community Director of GOOD magazine, a collaboration of people, businesses and non-profits seeking to change the world for the better. He says the mission of Good is "to move the world forward and to do as much good as possible."
is founder & CEO of Rickshaw Bagworks, a San Francisco-based bag company that draws designs off of the creative SF environment and urban cycling. He writes, "We are on the threshold of a revolution -- the dawn of a new age -- where sustainability will be the means and the measure of success."
is founder of Design Within Reach, the nationwide chain and catalog for innovatively designed furniture. He is also Founder of PUBLIC, a design based business with a mission to help us reduce our dependency on cars and think more intelligently and artfully about the way we get around and connect with our cities and communities.
is founder of Flora Grubb Gardens. Distinguished by her selection of exceptional plants suited to an unusual climate, Flora's neighborhood nursery has become a source of design inspiration for gardeners and landscape designers, and has attracted wide recognition as a design-driven gardener's destination.
is the Executive Director of People's Grocery, a health and wealth organization with a mission to improve the health and economy of low-income neighborhoods through the local food system. After working in social justice through the foster care system in Southern California, she later shifted into sustainability, advocating across the state for environmental justice and political ecology.
is the Executive Director of the Biomimicry Institute, a not-for-profit organization that promotes the study and imitation of nature's remarkably efficient designs to create sustainable technologies. Prior to this, she founded Women's Voices for the Earth as well as co-founded the national Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and Coming Clean, a national environmental health coalition.
is Principal of Hood Design, a design firm committed to issues that address the re-construction of urban landscapes within towns and cities. He is also Professor and former Chair of Landscape Architecture at UC Berkeley. His projects include the landscape for the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park, and Poplar Street-a green boulevard in the heart of downtown Macon, Georgia.
is the Insights Design Director at IDEO, the award-winning global design firm that takes a human-centered, design-based approach to helping organizations in the public and private sectors innovate and grow. She co-leads IDEO's Systems at Scale practice, a business community that tackles large-scale complex challenges that often involve diverse stakeholders in multiple channels.
, our MC for the night, is the co-founder of PechaKucha SF. He also is an associate with Group 4 Architecture, Research, and Planning, where his strong background in designing communities and urban areas as well as architecture gives him an excellent understanding of how to create architecture and spaces with civic presence that both draw from and contribute to their urban context.
These speakers will be in conversation with Paul Jamtgaard, Founder of PechaKucha SF, the top PechaKucha city in the world outside of Tokyo.
