Portugal. The Man will also mark the tour's kickoff with a number of TV appearances, including TBS' Conan on Thursday, September 29th as well as a performance on NBC's Last Call with Carson Daly on October 12th.
Produced by John Hill (Santigold, M.I.A.) with co-production from Portugal. The Man lead singer/guitarist/songwriter John Gourley and longtime band producer Casey Bates, and mixed by Grammy Award winner Andy Wallace (Nirvana, Jeff Buckley), "IN THE MOUNTAIN IN THE CLOUD" marks the first recording to truly harness the Portland, Oregon-based band's exhilarating live show. From the dramatic "Got It All (This Can't Be Living Now)" to the sprawling vision of "Sleep Forever," the album captures a truly distinctive band evolving in real time, revealing their singular sonic vision in its purest and most powerful form thus far.
Among the album's many highlights is the dynamic new single, "So American." The track will impact next month at alternative rock radio outlets nationwide.
The album -- Portugal. The Man's sixth overall -- has drawn widespread critical praise from an array of national publications and online outlets. "One of the year's best rock efforts," declared MTV.com, "brimming with angst, atmosphere, and angular, indie-leaning guitars... You'll be reading much more about them in the months to come." "The Alaska foursome (who now live in Portland, Ore.) retains much of its established tendencies here," noted Relix, "soaring psychedelic melodies; frontman John Gourley's soulful, soprano vocals; and the underlying sense that you are witnessing a spontaneous fusion of psych-rock with woodsy indie folk." "Seamless and innovative," decreed Paste, adding that Portugal. The Man "break musical boundaries with every release."
"Their cascading celestial-choir vocals and rangy guitars, make the band sound like Ziggy Stardust's distant cousin," applauded Rolling Stone, "and frontman John Gourley's elegant alto packs all the drama and grandiosity songs this regal require." Filter hailed the album as "a carefully crafted collection of 11 songs that don't stray from the band's alt-psychedelic formula, yet are a refreshing step forward," while Entertainment Weekly pronounced it as "pleasingly progressive, bathing twisting guitar riffs in psychedelic suds."
"'IN THE MOUNTAIN IN THE CLOUD' is an expertly crafted collection of songs that draws on the joy, sadness, and complexity of life as its creative palette to represent the spirit of our time," declared Jason Bentley, KCRW Music Director and Host of Morning Becomes Eclectic. "A bold task to take on the vastness of human experience, but this record has a switched-on consciousness that makes it a rare find. As a singular achievement, 'IN THE MOUNTAIN IN THE CLOUD' is simply one of the best records of the year."
Portugal. The Man is John Gourley: vocals, guitar; Zachary Scott Carothers: bass, vocals; Jason Sechrist: drums; Ryan Neighbors: keys, vocals.
