Smart City continues to take shape: New application projects launched in R_Lab Mobility

ID: 713653

Two more promising mobility projects have entered the pilot phase at R_Lab Mobility in Regensburg. The application projects “Digital Analysis of Stationary Traffic (DARuV)” and “ReSense3D” are using the new real-world laboratory for urban mobility to test their innovative technologies under existing conditions. The companies involved want to make their contribution to a smart and sustainable transport infrastructure in Regensburg.

(firmenpresse) - The “Digital Analysis of Stationary Traffic (DARuV)” application project by DCX Innovations GmbH aims to avoid congested city centers and simplify the management of urban infrastructure. To this end, a digital traffic space analysis of stationary traffic is being carried out. In addition to recording typical hazardous situations caused by parking violations, an overview of the utilization of parking spaces at the Jahnstadion Regensburg P+R facility or the university is also obtained. According to Andreas Fleischmann, Managing Director of DCX Innovations GmbH, real-world laboratories such as R_Lab Mobility offer the ideal opportunity to test finished solutions under real conditions before they are launched on the market: “On the other hand, the networks in the Mobility & Logistics cluster give us the opportunity to improve or redevelop certain areas of performance. Not only the proximity to the University and OTH Regensburg plays an important role here, but also the proximity in terms of content.”

At the same time, the companies digitalwerk GmbH and NewSense Engineering GmbH are creating a data protection-compliant 3D model of the central bus station at the University of Regensburg as part of the “ReSense3D” project. By using a sensor system, data such as passenger flows and traffic flows can be recorded in real time. “With the support of this data, the mobility needs and ratio of visitors at the bus station are recorded. Dedicated and sustainable mobility offers can thus be created,” says Dr. Yang Ji, Managing Director of NewSense Engineering GmbH. Enrico Engel, Managing Director of digitalwerk GmbH, adds: “The ReSense3D project enables us to test innovative technologies in the field of urban mobility in a practical and data protection-compliant manner. R_Lab Mobility gives us the opportunity to work closely with other stakeholders and the scientific community to develop sustainable and future-proof mobility solutions.” According to Engel, the aim is to use precise data to create new approaches for a networked and safe transport infrastructure that benefits both people and the environment.

The combination of digitalization and sustainable mobility, as described in the aforementioned application projects, is also relevant for the University of Regensburg (UR). On the one hand, the Faculty of Informatics and Data Science (FIDS) provides concentrated expertise in the field of AI. On the other hand, further opportunities for cooperation can be expanded. Data that provides insights into the specific mobility behavior of university members is particularly important for the UR's climate protection manager, Katrin Auernhammer. They are needed in order to develop sustainable mobility concepts and thus reduce the university's CO2 emissions. Prof. Dr. Andreas Roider, Sustainability Officer at the University of Regensburg, emphasizes: “Such interdisciplinary application projects are essential for a campus of the future.”
The two projects “DARuV” and “ReSense3D” are part of the R_Lab Mobility in the Galgenberg area, which was launched in May 2024. The real-world laboratory underlines Regensburg's commitment to smart and sustainable urban development and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB) as part of the urban smart city project “REGENSBURG_NEXT”. It will run until the end of 2026.

Background R_Lab Mobility
Regensburg is part of Germany's largest smart city funding program “Model Projects Smart Cities”. This makes the city one of a total of 73 “experimental locations” for integrated urban development funded by the German government. The real-world laboratory has created a testing ground for traffic planning, control and operations in order to develop and test solutions for the challenges in the field of mobility. The city of Regensburg has commissioned R-Tech GmbH to manage the R_Lab in the Galgenberg area. Anne Häner, project manager at R-Tech GmbH for the Mobility & Logistics cluster and project manager of R_Lab Mobility, explains: “The aim is to test smart city applications under real-life conditions with the participating players from science and industry. Innovative mobility solutions are thus brought from theory into practice in the so-called real laboratory.” The company AVL Software and Functions GmbH has been involved in R_Lab Mobility since May of this year with the “Environmental Sensor Box” application project. All data collected in R_Lab Mobility is stored centrally in a dataspace and made available to project participants for research and development purposes.
