(firmenpresse) - MALIBU, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/30/11 -- Dr. Akikur Mohammad, Founder of , the leading in Malibu, California and Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at the (USC.edu), recently launched an awareness campaign designed to warn the public about the often lethal risks of detoxing from alcohol at home, without proper medical guidance.

Dr. Mohammad said, "There is nothing more dangerous and irresponsible than an individual attempting to detox from alcohol without proper medical supervision. Based on the various levels of abuse, every person is different when it comes to alcohol detox; however, regardless of the variables involved, one thing is certain, if an individual makes the careless decision to abuse without proper medical attention, irreversible physical damage and/or death are plausible outcomes." Mohammad added, "While the severity of the withdrawal depends upon the individual's basic chemistry, alcohol consumption levels, environment, etc., the public needs to know that can be lethal even if the abuser consumed very little alcohol on a regular basis. The alcohol detox process can be physically and emotionally traumatic and needs to be guided by a professional."

Dr. Mohammad and his team intend to raise awareness about proper through media outreach, public town hall meetings and a word-of-mouth campaign throughout the next year. Mohammad added, "While most addicts and alcoholics know how physically and emotionally traumatic the detox process can be, it is critical that parents, friends and supporters understand that if someone they know is attempting to detox by themselves, they need to be stopped and directed to a professional. It's not enough to be happy that your loved one has decided to stop drinking, the individual needs to detox properly or they run the risk of death -- it is that simple."
