150 Years of the Rigi-Scheidegg Railway: Steam Rides and Exhibition Bring History Back to Life
150 years of the Rigi-Scheidegg Railway – steam rides, special exhibition and contemporary witnesses commemorate a bygone era.

(firmenpresse) - From 30 August to 7 September 2025, the Rigi-Scheidegg will celebrate the legendary Rigi-Scheidegg Railway (RSB). Marking the 150th anniversary of its inauguration, the history of what was once the highest steam railway in Europe will come alive once more. Visitors can look forward to free steam train rides with the historic locomotive “Ticino” and a comprehensive special exhibition at the Rigi-Scheidegg mountain inn.
Steam Rides with Locomotive “Ticino”:
A true highlight awaits railway enthusiasts on two weekends: 30/31 August and 6/7 September 2025, from 10 am to 4 pm. During these dates, the steam locomotive “Ticino” will run back and forth on a 100-metre track specially laid between the mountain inn and the Rigi-Scheidegg chapel.
Under the direction of Goldau-based steam engine specialist Martin Horath, visitors will experience the raw power and nostalgic charm of a working steam engine – free of charge and in a unique mountain setting.
The locomotive “Ticino” was built in 1889 by Jung (Jungenthal, Germany) and is considered the oldest operational steam locomotive from this manufacturer. Originally employed for river correction works in Ticino, the engine survived as a preserved piece of industrial heritage. “Only a single weld was ever needed on the boiler; otherwise, the locomotive is still in its original condition,” notes Horath.
Significantly, the “Ticino” is identical in design to the three G3/3 locomotives built by the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works (SLM), which once served on the Rigi-Scheidegg Railway. Two of these were scrapped, while the third has vanished without trace. By bringing the “Ticino” – symbolically renamed “Lok First” – back to the Scheidegg, a sister engine from the same era has returned to the mountain.
Special Exhibition at the Mountain Inn:
Running alongside the steam rides, the Rigi-Scheidegg Mountain Inn will host a rich special exhibition from 30 August to 7 September 2025.
The exhibition showcases historic photographs, portraits, documents, and original artefacts, offering a window into the rise of early Alpine tourism and the visionary construction of the Rigi-Scheidegg steam railway. Many of the images and documents, sourced from private archives, will be on public display for the very first time.
A dedicated section pays tribute to the Italian contractor Domenico Taddei (1830–1908), whose expertise and leadership were instrumental in building the metre-gauge adhesion railway. Taddei represents the many Italian workers who, through backbreaking labour in tunnelling, bridge-building, and track-laying, made this pioneering engineering feat possible.
The exhibition is open daily from 10 am to 4 pm (during restaurant opening hours). It is curated and organised by Adrian Nigg-Arnold, Chairman of the Organising Committee “150 Years Rigi-Scheidegg Railway”.
Remembering a Pioneer Achievement:
Through steam rides, exhibition, and historical testimonies, this anniversary builds a bridge between past and present. It pays tribute to the engineering ingenuity, the bold vision of the builders and workers, and the enduring fascination of a railway that, despite its early demise, left a lasting imprint on the cultural and tourist heritage of the Rigi.
