VIN laser marking as part of the digital strategy
Marking the vehicle identification number (VIN) is more than just a production step— it is a strategic data anchor

(PresseBox) - In networked automotive production, almost every component becomes a digital twin. The VIN is a central identifier, and marking it is a critical step in the value chain.
Trotec's VIN marker enables depth engraving of up to 0.5 mm on steel and aluminium, with a repeat accuracy of ±5 µm. Complete safety documentation and fieldbus interfaces, such as Profinet, support integration into new or existing production lines. The engraving is tamper-proof and maintenance-free, and complies with ISO 3779/4030.
As predictive maintenance, blockchain supply chains and digital twins become increasingly important, vehicle identification numbers are also becoming more important. According to Deloitte, 72% of OEMs will be investing in end-to-end traceability systems by 2027 — VIN data will be the starting point, and engraving with laser technology will provide the necessary flexibility for future production.
A global commercial vehicle manufacturer uses Trotec systems for VIN marking and links the data to its own system. This enables maintenance intervals, warranty claims and recalls to be managed automatically.
