Ultimax.us decides on the contribution towards Brazilian hydropower plant
at Belo Monte.
The hydropower plant at Belo Monte in Brazil is set to be capable of
providing 11,000 megawatts of electricity to 23 million homes just 4 years
after construction. In the machine cabin, 20 Francis turbines will be
installed with outputs of 550 MW each. Belo Monte will consequently become
the third-largest hydropower plant in the world.
In February 2010, the Brazilian environment minister, Carlos Minc,
announced the granting of the environmental permit. The necessary
conditions have already been satisfied and the planned offsetting and
compensation measures for interfering with nature have already been
fulfilled.
Approximately 16,000 people will have to be relocated for the project
costing 9 billion. A further 800 million dollars are estimated for the
relocation and for environmental compensation.
According to government data, a side benefit of commissioning the power
plant is that 4 million tonnes of CO2 emissions will be saved annually. The
share of renewable hydropower should increase to 88 per cent while thermal
generation should drop to 11 per cent.
Through close cooperation with Norte Energía SA, the rights of use of the
gigantic hydropower plant and of the river are guaranteed for 35 years.
