"Dexter The Dancing Horse" Launches at Children's Hospital Oakland
Easy-Reading Book Aims to Help Kids Have Hope and Feel Better

That was the driving force in author Candy Kattenburg's telling of a true story in her recently launched book for children, "Dexter The Dancing Horse."
Oakland California's renowned Children's Hospital & Research Center recently received a donation of fifty copies of the book's first printing. Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland is Northern California's only independent not-for-profit regional medical center for children and it is a national leader in many pediatric specialties and sub-specialties. Similar donations to other hospitals are planned.
Often, the most memorable story is the simplest. This is such a case. In only a few pages having pictures and large, easy-to-read print, the book makes the perfect bedside experience. Despite its size -- this little book carries a powerful message of inspiration. The book's hero, Dexter, is a world traveler and a "dressage" champion horse -- but more. He is an example of what can happen in the darkest of times -- when something inside says "don't give up."
"We can't know exactly what Dexter went through," author Kattenburg explains, "but he showed us the outcome of his perseverance in a way few people can convey. And yes, Dexter is a real horse, in a real meadow, right here in California -- and his story is a true one."
Author Kattenburg is also the gregarious executive director of The Orinda, CA Chamber of Commerce -- not a person one would expect to write this book, but by almost miraculous means, the story came to her through a friendship and it was just too powerful and unique for her to ignore. She enlisted the artistic talents of Chicago's Amy Kelly to illustrate the book, and the project is driven by Candy's hope that the message will help people -- especially children.
