Graduate Survey by reed.co.uk counters media pessimism about the relevance of many further education courses

(firmenpresse) - LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 10/18/11 -- UK workers surveyed by reed.co.uk, one of the UK's leadings sites for , Manchester and Birmingham, have asserted that their university degree was useful in landing a first job.

Of the 679 graduates surveyed who had attended university, two thirds of those in employment believe their degree played an important part in landing them their first job.

34% of those surveyed believed their degree was indispensible. A further 32% found that it had been 'somewhat useful', according to .

The remaining third said that they had not used any of the information or skills in their first employment following graduation.

The results of reed.co.uk's Graduate Survey may provide some comfort to students currently considering going to university.

As more institutions join Exeter University in charging the full GBP 9,000 fees limit for a yearly university education, the value of a university ducation can seldom have been under so much scrutiny.

Commenting on the Graduate Survey, Mark Rhodes of reed.co.uk comments:

"The findings of reed.co.uk's Graduate Survey suggest the outlook for students, graduates and anyone considering taking a place at university is less bleak than the media may have us believe."

"University is not a low cost option, but with more than a third of graduates indicating that their degree has been indispensible in their first job, there are compelling reasons as to why it's a worthwhile investment.

"Very few degrees equip graduates with the skills required to walk straight in to a career, so it's crucial to approach future employment with a resilient and open mind, always considering what transferable skills you can take the jobs market."
