Emergency Animal Hospital of Northwest Austin Warns of Canine Influenza, Urges Vaccination

"Canine influenza is an airborne illness that is easily spread," said Dr. Johnson. "Dogs who are in boarding, attend day care, visit the dog park or receive grooming services are at increased risk. However, we are urging all dog owners to take this threat seriously and we strongly recommend that dogs are vaccinated against canine influenza."

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), canine influenza only affects dogs. It cannot infect humans, cats or other animal species. The CDC says the first known cases of canine influenza were recorded in 2004, and the disease was recognized as a "newly emerging pathogen in dogs" in 2005.

Treatment protocol is primarily supportive care. According to the CDC, this helps the infected dog's immune system stay strong and fight off the disease. A severe case may cause the onset of pneumonia.

"Our goal with treatment is to identify the cause of the illness and confirm that the dog's symptoms are in fact caused by canine influenza," said Dr. Johnson. "Depending on the severity of the illness, we will do our best to keep the dog comfortable and hydrated. Our goal is to support the dog's immune system and prevent secondary infections."





Pet owners who are concerned about canine influenza should speak with their veterinarian about the influenza vaccine. If a pet owner believes that their dog's symptoms are indicative of canine influenza, Dr. Johnson encourages the pet owner to seek veterinary care from an .
