Cancer Agencies Come Together to Build a Better Camp for Children With Cancer
(firmenpresse) - CALGARY, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 10/18/11 -- The Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta announced today that three cancer agencies in Alberta-Kids with Cancer Society, Alberta Cancer Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society, Alberta/NWT Division-have come together to make a gift totalling $875,000 to its Capital Campaign.
The gifts from the cancer agencies set the stage for a successful campaign to raise much-needed dollars to upgrade and renovate the . Following the cancer agencies' lead, Albertans quickly got behind the project with gifts totalling $5 million to date-66 per cent of the $8 million fundraising target.
"I am humbled by the support we've received for this project so far," said Christine McIver, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Kids Cancer Care. "I think Albertans want to see charities working together like this, leveraging their resources to help families facing this disease. This gift from these cancer agencies speaks to that collaborative spirit."
Johann Casas, an 11-year-old cancer survivor, was the first kid in Alberta to thank the cancer agencies for their gift. She presented them with Camp Kindle t-shirts to show her appreciation on behalf of Kids Cancer Care and all the children in Alberta facing cancer.
Johann is especially excited about the Camp Kindle renovation project because it includes plans for a pool. When Johann packed her bags to go to camp last summer, she did what most kids do. She packed her swimsuit-only to discover that, at Camp Kindle, there was no pool.
The began this fall and is scheduled to be completed by June 2012, in time for summer camp. In addition to a new pool, upgrades to several older buildings, the camp roadways and infrastructure are in the works. A ropes course, double zip line and climbing wall were recently installed. Some older buildings such as the camper dorms, main lodge and medical clinic, will be replaced altogether. The upgrades will make Camp Kindle more accessible for kids with disabilities, more hygienic for sick children and will bring the facility up to current building codes.
"Creating a here in Alberta has been a dream in the making for many, many years," said Christine McIver. "It would not be possible without the support of our community. Thank you."
