VHA Inc. Introduces New Labor Management Program to Help Hospitals Overcome Clinical Staffing Challenges and Improve Patient Care
(firmenpresse) - IRVING, TX -- (Marketwire) -- 10/18/11 -- Because proper clinical staffing plays a key role in clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction scores and hospital reimbursement, VHA Inc., the national health care network, now offers participating members a free services assessment to help them identify their clinical staffing shortages and, from there, determine which labor management solutions will best meet their needs.
Research has shown that staffing shortages can compromise the quality of patient care, clinical staff productivity and the ability to serve more patients. Recently published research in the New England Journal of Medicine found that patients in understaffed units had a 6% higher mortality risk than patients in fully staffed nursing units. With the anticipated continuation of the country's current clinicians' shortage, health care organizations are experiencing increasing pressure to identify viable solutions to their clinical staffing challenges.
"Health care providers are increasingly challenged to maintain consistent nurse staffing levels with the growing shortage of nurses in the U.S.," says Lillee Gelinas, vice president and Chief Nursing Officer for VHA. "Nurse staffing is a critical component to providing high quality patient care. Hospitals will face declining reimbursement as nurse staffing levels decrease. But there are solutions we can provide to help members achieve the highest quality clinical outcomes through our industry-leading health staffing agencies and our clinical quality programs."
VHA provides members with a comprehensive offering of clinical improvement programs and consulting to help ensure the highest quality clinical outcomes. In addition, Novation, VHA's supply contracting company, helps members overcome their staffing challenges by offering 18 industry-leading staffing agencies on contract.
Several VHA member hospitals already have benefitted from Novation's portfolio of staffing services. According to Jill Underwood, vice president of Human Resources for Methodist Hospital, Arcadia, Ca., "As a result of our agreement with AMN Healthcare, we saved $168,000 in 2010, and our average hourly rate for temporary nurse staffing has decreased by $2 per hour in the two years we've been working with them."
-- VHA Inc., based in Irving, Texas, is a national network of not-for-profit health care organizations that work together to drive maximum savings in the supply chain arena, set new levels of clinical performance and identify and implement best practices to improve operational efficiency and clinical outcomes. In 2010, VHA delivered record savings and value of $1.7 billion to members. Formed in 1977, VHA serves nearly 1,350 not-for-profit hospitals and more than 30,000 non-acute care providers nationwide, coordinating delivery of its programs and services through its 16 regional offices. VHA has been listed as one of the best places to work in health care by Modern Healthcare since 2008 and one of the best places to work in IT by Computer World since 2007.
