2012 Artist Designed Bench Competition Request for Qualifications

(firmenpresse) - LAGUNA BEACH, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 10/27/11 -- The City of Laguna Beach is seeking applications from qualified artists to undertake a $15,000 artist designed bench installation at its prestigious Heisler Park. Heisler Park has undergone the final phase of an $8 million renovation to improve public access, preserve the park from erosion and improve public safety.

The park is on an 18.5 acre ocean bluff that includes beach access, walking paths, lawns, gardens and picnic areas. There are numerous ocean view benches, public art installations, a lawn bowling area, restrooms and gazebo. A marine preserve, off shore from the park, offers extensive diving and tide pools to observe marine life.

The Arts Commission is seeking a letter of interest and qualifications from an artist or artist team from Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties. The art work should accommodate 4 to 6 people; be appropriate to the audience who use the bench including the hugely successful City of Laguna Beach Junior Lifeguard program; be functional as a bus stop and also face the spectacular ocean views; and be constructed of durable materials. The deadline for submissions is Friday, January 13, 2012.

Laguna Beach has 75 pieces of public art in its collection, the oldest installed in 1933 by Ruth Peabody. Long renowned as an artist colony, today Laguna Beach is home to three art festivals, a playhouse, museum, art college and over 90 galleries. This project will be a highly anticipated installation that will complete several years of work renovating this beautiful location for future generations to enjoy.
