Government of Canada to Aid Earthquake Victims in Turkey

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 10/28/11 -- Today, the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, announced Canada's relief assistance for those affected by the earthquake in eastern Turkey.

"Canada stands by the people of Turkey and offers its support and sympathy to the families and loved ones affected by the tragic earthquake," said Minister Oda. "Canada will help meet the critical need for emergency shelters for thousands left homeless and now facing rain, snow, and cold weather after this devastating earthquake."

An earthquake of magnitude 7.2 struck eastern Turkey on Sunday, October 23, 2011, followed by more than 600 reported aftershocks. Recent figures indicate that the death toll reached 461, and with more than 2,000 buildings damaged, approximately 40,000 people have been left homeless.

Canada, through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), is supporting the Canadian Red Cross Society to deploy 500 winterized tents to Turkey. These urgently needed emergency shelters will be delivered to the Turkish Red Crescent Society for 500 families, or approximately 2,500 people.

Canada continues to monitor the situation in Turkey.
