(Thomson Reuters ONE) - Press release 12 November 2009Ruukki has been chosen as the steel structure contractor for a bridgeto be built at Dragsfjärd archipelago in southwest Finland to replacethe Lövö ferry. The bridge will be almost 500 metres long and featurethe largest sections ever made for a Finnish bridge. Ruukki'sinstallation technology chosen for the contract is being used for thefirst time in Finland and will considerably speed up installation ofthe massive bridge sections. The order received by Ruukki is worthalmost EUR 3 million."The steel bridge solution will considerably shorten overallconstruction time and the installation method chosen will also speedup work. The large sections will be installed in place in a week inspring 2010. Total steel structure installation time on site will becut from half a year to just one month compared to conventionalconstruction methods. This will leave us more time for the otherdemanding stages of work in the bridge project," says ConstructionManager Mauri Ketonen from Skanska Infra.Ruukki will supply the steel structures, including installation, toSkanska Infra Oy. The structures will be fabricated at Ruukki's plantin Ylivieska, Finland and be completed into ready-to-install sectionsin Kalajoki, from where they will be shipped by barge to theconstruction site.Ruukki will make full use of its installation methods, which havebeen employed elsewhere in the Nordic countries, for the first timein Finland in the Lövö bridge project. Each section will be about 100metres long and weigh 200 tonnes. The sections will be lifteddirectly into place by sea crane and welded together. The high degreeof structural prefabrication will not only speed up installationtime, but also minimise construction risks in maritime conditions andreduce adverse environmental impacts, for example, leaving the banksin their natural condition. The 460-metre long composite girder bridge to be built in theDragsfjärd archipelago will span the Lövö strait at a height of 18metres. Ruukki will start fabricating the structures in late 2009 andthe girders will be installed in spring 2010. Lövö bridge will opento traffic in autumn 2010.For further information, please contact:Heikki Wilén, Business Manager, Infrastructure Construction, RuukkiConstruction, Tel. +358 50 026 0570Read more about Ruukki's references in infrastructure construction.Images of Ruukki's references in infrastructure construction can befound in the image bank.Rautaruukki supplies metal-based components, systems and totalsolutions to the construction and engineering industries.
