1-Source Electronics: Hard Drive Suppliers Flooded by Worried Manufacturers
(firmenpresse) - HAUPPAUGE, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 11/09/11 -- In the past few days, international 1-Source Electronics has experienced a large increase in hard drive buying activity. They state that their clients are worried about an imminent global shortage of hard drive inventory, due to massive flooding in Thailand. "Our customers are hoping to avoid or minimize the effects of a to secure supplies of best-in-class brands like Toshiba, Hitachi GST, Seagate, and Samsung," stated 1-Source COO Bruce MacArthur. The flooding in Thailand is the latest natural disaster to adversely impact the electronics industry. Over a thousand factories have remained closed, and the industry has been particularly hard hit. Factories in Thailand supply about 40 percent of the world's hard drives, in addition to parts for hard drive manufacturers based elsewhere. System integrators are concerned that the global supply could hit rock bottom by the end of this month.
Three key industrial parks in the Pathum Thai province, near Bangkok, have been rendered "inoperable." The production lines of key hard drive manufacturers have come to a complete halt. The 1TB (Terabyte) SATA drive has been affected the most. "Companies that depend on hard drives for their products, such as PC Manufacturers, could face shortages and higher prices, resulting in lower profits," according to 1-Source Vice President Robert Lodato. The shortage, and higher prices, is expected to last until summer of 2012.
