(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/10/11 -- The Canadian Pork Council (CPC) welcomes the news that the Agriculture Innovation Program (AIP) is now available to the hog sector.

The AIP will support industry led science and technology initiatives that bridge the gap between ideas and products being implemented on farm or in the market place. The $50 million program will provide funding two steams called the Knowledge Creation and Transfer Stream and the Commercialization Stream.

"The pork industry values the research, technology transfer and commercialization initiatives undertaken by CPC's Swine Innovation Porc, Canadian Swine Health Board, and producers. The AIP will help take the research initiatives designed to enhance the competitiveness and differentiation of our pork industry into practical applications that will assure the long term durability of the Canadian Hog Industry," stated CPC's President, Jurgen Preugschas.

"The Canadian Pork Council will be exploring what funding opportunityexist under this new program to support the implementation of the upcoming Canadian pork industry's strategic plan. The strategic plan will identify our challenges as an industry and more importantly deciding how we can maximize our opportunities and builds on our strengths," added Preugschas.

The Canadian pork industries strategic plan will focus on three areas:

Industry integrity - essentially demonstrating to the world that the Canadian hog industry produces high quality and safe food using humane practices and coexist with its neighbours with benign impacts on the environment.

Competitiveness - enabling the industry to reduce its cost of doing business.

Market Penetration - directed at domestic and the international opportunities.

The CPC serves as the national voice for hog producers in Canada. A federation of nine provincial pork industry associations, our organization's purpose is to play a leadership role in achieving and maintaining a dynamic and prosperous Canadian pork sector.
