OpenLogic Survey Shows 73% of Android Developers Uncertain About Open Source License Compliance
OpenLogic Surveyed Android Developers at AnDevCon II Conference

For this research, OpenLogic surveyed 57 developers attending the in Silicon Valley from November 6-9, 2011.
61% of Android developers stated that they use open source software components in their Android apps, while an additional 16% were unsure
73% of Android developers have no open source compliance process in place or are uncertain whether a process exists in their organization
28% of Android developers do not audit for open source software components at all, while another 48% rely on self-reporting by developers
Only 20% of Android developers use scanning tools to identify open source code
Applications that contain open source components are required to comply with the rules of all relevant licenses, such as the GPL or Apache license. Applications that fail to comply may be subject to legal action or removal from app stores.
Today's new AnDevCon survey confirms the results of research that OpenLogic conducted earlier this year, finding that with basic open source licensing requirements. For that study, OpenLogic used its to scan 635 leading mobile applications in order to identify open source components and evaluate compliance with the relevant licenses.
"The majority of Android apps in the marketplace today contain open source, but most developers don't have a compliance process in place. The end result is a high rate of non-compliance as we found in our earlier research," said Kim Weins, senior vice president of products and marketing at OpenLogic. "Non-compliance with open source licenses is typically not purposeful, but rather caused by a lack of awareness and visibility into open source usage. We hope that this survey and our previous research can help shine a light on the problem and encourage companies to move toward compliance "
