Ice Bear on its way to Copenhagen
(Thomson Reuters ONE) - (Copenhagen 3.12 2009) An 11-tonne block of ice containing a bronzepolar bear skeleton is on its way to Copenhagen. This will be turnedinto an ice bear sculpture which will melt while the COP 15negotiations are being held.A puddle of water and a polar bear skeleton will be all that remainsat Kongens Nytorv in the centre of the city, acting as a reminder ofthe climate challenges facing us.At 7am on Friday morning, a Bring Frigoscandia refrigerated vehiclecontaining this ice-cold cargo will arrive at Kongens Nytorv, wherethe ice bear will be part of the WWF stand. At 12 noon that same day, Mark Coreth, an environmentally awareartist, will start the work of turning the large block of icecontaining a polar bear skeleton into a full-scale sculpture of apolar bear."The sculpture will clearly put the spotlight on the environmentalchallenges facing us. I hope that as many people as possible come tosee it and that they all touch it. In that way, they will becomesculptors and help it to melt. This act will be a strong symbol ofhow human beings are affecting the climate," says Mark Coreth, whotook the initiative to start the project. On 11 December, a similar ice bear will be put on display inTrafalgar Square in London. The Ice Bear Project has been established by English artist MarkCoreth. He got the idea for the project after he saw the consequencesof climate change in the Arctic during a journey to Baffin Island.Bringing the ice bear to DenmarkBring Frigoscandia is using advanced freezing and refrigerationtechnology to transport the ice and skeleton to Copenhagen. Bring isalso sponsoring the project."It's not every day we transport a polar bear skeleton frozen into 11tonnes of ice. We're proud to be able to contribute our knowledge andfunds to this project," says Lard Adgård the CEO of BringFrigoscandia. The Copenhagen Ice Bear will be exhibited at ground level so thatanyone visiting Kongens Nytorv can reach out and touch this iconicsymbol of the Arctic. Set within ice underneath the bear will bethree plaques of scientificallyapproved information concerning the deterioration of the Arctic seaice.More information on the project: http://www.icebearproject.org/For further informationKjell S.
