(Thomson Reuters ONE) - Rautaruukki Corporation Stock exchange release 11 December 2009 at10amRuukki is to further improve operational efficiency by merging thePuurtajankatu steel service centre with the Asponkatu steel servicecentre in Järvenpää, Finland. The steel service centres in Seinäjokiand Raahe will be merged to form one service centre organisation andoperations at the Hyvinkää steel service centre will be reorganised. At these sites, employer-employee negotiations regarding improvingthe efficiency of the steel service centre network ended on 11December 2009. Ruukki has a total of seven steel service centres inFinland.Employer-employee negotiations resulted in the loss of 153 jobs.Fifteen of the persons affected will be subject to various pensionarrangements. In addition, during the negotiations, new jobs werefound elsewhere in Ruukki for 11 persons facing redundancy.Ruukki will assist in the re-employment of persons facing redundancyby, for example, local training programmes carried out in associationwith the Finnish employment services. In addition, data about personsfacing redundancy will be collected centrally to ensure any vacanciesarising are primarily offered to redundant employees.Due to weak market conditions, some steel service centres will alsohave to temporarily lay off workers. Layoffs will begin in March 2010at the earliest. The extent and duration of layoffs will varydepending on site.In addition, to save costs, the capacity of plate and prefabricationoperations at the Raahe Works will be adjusted to meet demand byusing just one pusher type slab reheating furnace for rolling and bychanging shift schedules. This will release around 30 people fromprefabrication and maintenance operations. These people can fill jobvacancies at the works to replace fixed-term contracts. This meansthere is no immediate need to lay off people in these operations. Theneed for layoffs will be reviewed each month until the start of thesummer holiday season.> See stock exchange release dated 22 October 2009For further information, please contact:Sakari Kallo, Senior Vice President, Production, Ruukki Metals, tel.+358 20 592 8888Rautaruukki supplies metal-based components, systems and integratedsystems to the construction and engineering industries.
