Britons Gearing Up for a Tree-mendous Christmas, Say Debenhams
(firmenpresse) - LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 12/09/11 -- For the first time, Britons are snapping up multiple Christmas trees for their homes. While the economic climate might be 'frightful', a boom in spending on means inside British homes it's 'delightful'.
Research from high street retailer Debenhams(i) has shown that British families now adorn their homes with on average three Christmas trees.
The trees are most commonly positioned in the lounge, the dining room and outside the front door in a bid to cheer spirits and shake off the financial doom and gloom.
As well as picking up an artificial tree, 76 per cent of people are opting for at least one natural tree and 56 per cent are experimenting with contemporary designs in silver or gold.
Some families (11 per cent) even go so far as to kit out bedrooms and the kitchen with Christmas trees to ensure the festive feeling continues throughout the house.
Ruth Attridge, spokesperson for says, "No longer happy with just 'decking the halls', Britons are making sure Christmas is felt in every inch of the home this festive season.
"By offering a convenient, reusable way of decorating the home and with the improvements in design, an artificial tree is no longer viewed as a festive cop-out".
Children are entirely responsible for dressing the trees in 54 per cent of families, perhaps accounting for the 51 per cent who said that their trees would vary in style and would not have coordinating decorations.
The majority of respondents (81 per cent) said they would be picking up at least three new tree decorations while sales figures reveal that the 'all you need' 50 piece sets are the runaway bestsellers. Silver and white and children's novelty designs are currently performing well - up 69 per cent on last year.
Shoppers are going bigger and better when it comes to the festive season with sales of Debenhams' new seven foot tall tree making it this year's bestseller so far. Another style proving popular is the six foot tall dewdrop pre lit tree which features a raindrop effect at the end of the branches.
Online availability has accounted for 70 per cent of Christmas tree sales with savvy shoppers choosing to have these bulky purchases delivered straight to home, rather than struggling home with arms laden.
Attridge adds, "Whatever happens, it is clear Britons aren't letting anything affect their enjoyment of Christmas".
