Renewable energy from waste: BDI - BioEnergy obtains another
multi-million commission to build a BioGas plant
19.12.2011 / 08:56
---------------------------------------------------------------------
- Multi-Feedstock BioGas plant to be built in northern France
- Order volume amounts to EUR 4.45 million
- Use of the new separation concept from BDI
(Grambach, 19.12.2011) BDI - BioEnergy International AG has obtained
another major commission to build a BioGas plant: following the
construction of a BioGas plant in Marl, Germany, a French customer has now
commissioned BDI to build another Multi-Feedstock BioGas plant to process
industrial waste. The plant is to be located in northern France, while the
order volume amounts to EUR 4.45 million.
'The high flexibility, functional reliability and economic viability of our
Multi-Feedstock Technology have already been proved impressively in our
BioDiesel plants. We are benefitting from our many years of experience in
the generation of energy from residual and waste materials in the
introduction of our BioGas Technology: a French waste disposal company is
opting for the BDI technology for the generation of renewable energy from
food waste,' says Dr Edgar Ahn, CSO of BDI. 'This commission is further
evidence that we have chosen the right technologies and that the market for
BioGas plants has tremendous global growth potential.'
A start is to be made on building the BioGas plant in France before the end
of this year. The French waste disposal corporation intends to begin by
installing a system for the acceptance, comminution and handling of
leftover food. After this, a BioGas plant for the biological processing of
organic residual materials and a combustion engine system for the
generation of electrical and thermal energy from BioGas are to be
installed. The complete plant will be producing almost 4.2 million Nm³of
BioGas and thus 2.1 MWel of electricity per year. This is enough to supply
about 4,000 European households. The plant has also been designed in such a
way that the capacity can be doubled easily in future.
New separation concept broadens BDI's service range
BDI's French client collects and separates waste from food production and
retailing, restaurants and the agricultural industry. About 65,000 tonnes
of very different waste - from food and grease trap waste to blood and
flotates - can be processed into BioEnergy with the help of the BDI
technology.
However, since the original material often contains contaminants like
packaging materials, metals or glass, a new separation concept from BDI is
being used at this BioGas plant to process the raw materials. This unique
new process unit is specially designed for the separation of different
waste flows into their organic content and packaging materials and for
optimum co-ordination with the BioGas technology supplied by BDI. The
separation process enables an extremely high purity level to be achieved
with the BioGas substrate combined with a clean and dry inorganic material
flow.
'This technique that is already being used successfully makes it possible
to feed the BioGas substrate directly into our fermentation system -
without formation of the floating sludge layer that is frequently
encountered in conventional processesand which may lead to operational
disturbances. The separation concept is an optimum addition to BDI's
product range,' explains Dr Edgar Ahn.
