(firmenpresse) - ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR -- (Marketwire) -- 01/10/12 -- Housing starts in the St. John's region decreased during the month of December, according to preliminary data(1) released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). December's housing starts totalled 131 units throughout the St. John's area compared to 172 units in December 2010. There were 23 additional starts in urban centres outside the St. John's region, for a total of 154 provincial urban housing starts. For the year, 1,923 housing starts were recorded within the St. John's area and 2,322 in provincial urban areas.
Single-detached and multiple unit construction activity were both lower throughout the St. John's area in December. "Despite lower activity levels in December, housing starts in the St. John's area rose six per cent on an annual basis in 2011 compared to 2010, supported in large part by growth in population, income and employment," said Chris Janes, senior market analyst with CMHC in Newfoundland and Labrador.
