Apprenticeships as Well as the Fees Hike Could Be Responsible for the Fall in University Applications, Says Perspective

(firmenpresse) - LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 02/03/12 -- Recently released figures have revealed that the volume university applications have dropped by 6.4 per cent, or 22,000, when compared to this time last year. Although the increase in tuition fees has taken the brunt of the blame, Perspective, the Midlands based pioneers of systems, says the rise in popularity of apprenticeship schemes could also be partly responsible.

In conjunction with university tuition fees rising to a maximum of GBP 9,000 per year, apprenticeship schemes have steadily grown in popularity with learners and employers alike, and are heavily supported and incentivised by government funding.

The option of learning and earning is an attractive opportunity for many learners over that of making large financial commitments to attend university and subsequently entering a largely saturated student jobs market.

Paul Davis, managing director of, provider, Perspective, commented: "Apprenticeship schemes got off to a slow start in life but, especially over the past couple of years, have continued to grow in popularity. They provide a number of positives, importantly including an increased chance of finding an appropriate, and relevant, job after the scheme, with the apprenticeship provider.

The number of employers offering apprenticeships is also set to increase with the government subsidising and incentivising the schemes. The alluring ability for employers to also shape their business how they need rather than having to shape it around available skill sets is also responsible for the increase in popularity with employers.

Paul continued: "Universities were also hit by the number of mature student, 21 or over, applications which were down by 13.4 per cent compared to last year. With apprenticeship schemes, this age group has seen the biggest increase. I believe that it is trends like this that is why the fees hike isn't purely to blame for the low application numbers."
