Bunions can develop due to hallux valgus, a deformity where the bone which joins to the big toe juts outward on the inside part of the foot. The bump is the bunion which is comprised of bone and soft tissue. The most common cause of bunions is ill-fitting shoes. Most often high heels with narrow, pointed toe boxes cause the bunion due to the unnatural position of the foot.
