World-record-man Flühr on the slopes of both mountains for training

Around one week ahead of the world-record-project 55.555@Oberaudorf-Kössen the ski-resorts of Hocheck in Oberaudorf (GER) and Unterberghorn in Kössen (AUT), both located close to Kufstein in Tyrol, are busy preparing for the forthcoming world record attempt. On 13th-14th January the German extreme-ski racer and 11 times world-record holder Christian Flühr (www.cf-1.net) will raise the world-record of altitude on skis to a level of 55.555 m. The actual record is about 46.920,and is held by an Austrian skier. At this weekend the German will start to get familiar with the slopes, During the day he will compete in Kössen and at night he will race 20 km further west at Oberaudorf.

(firmenpresse) - No Easy Ride…

On Friday, 2nd January 2009, there was the first official appointment for checking the slopes at Unterberghorn of Kössen. Flühr was accompanied by his actual team-chief and team-medic, Dr. Christian Schmidt. The weather-conditions on the day were awful, with poor visibility, but both skiers got a first good view of the run to the valley, where the first part of the event will take place. Flühr will ski an altitude of about 900 metres. The slope is in some parts classified as black, a real challenge for the ski-champion. The manger of Kössen ski-resort, Schorsch Primoser, reports on the actual situation of the attempt: “We have to put snow on 2 different spots on the valley run, so that Christian can go the fastest way down. Our valley runs have been open for 2 weeks and the weather forecast is perfect for the next week:. We are expecting cold temperatures, so that we can make lots of snow with our canons. We will create a perfect surface for Christian and will do our part, so that 55.555 will work like a charm!” .Christian’s team-captain was surprised at the conditions at the record mountain: “This won’t be an easy record for Christian, but he has skied nearly every day for the past few weeks. When the two little parts will be opened, it will be a wild rush. And the visibility can only be better than today- I pray for more than 20 metres sight. Otherwise it will be tricky to set this record.”

Third Attempt at Oberaudorf

After the slope check at Kössen in the evening the second part takes place at Hocheck in Oberaudorf. When Flühr and his team-captain arrived, the snow-canons at Hocheck were firing lots of artificial snow. Hannes Rechenauer, Manger of Hocheck, tells why: “We are making lots of snow so as to be prepared for the attempt, but Hocheck is already ready and looking forward to the record. We have already perfect conditions in our ski-resort. Christian can start and meet the challenge!” After 2004 and 2005 this will be the third attempt which takes in parts place of Hocheck in Oberaudorf, close to Kufstein, Tyrol. Christian says: “I know why I have returned to Hocheck. There are very few resorts, which have such a perfect night-run. It feels like coming home.” In Oberaudorf Christian is one of the most talked about topics on the streets and in the pubs. “I have been with Christian at the records in Zell am See, Obergurgl and Landgraaf, but I never noticed such things. In Oberaudorf everybody knows Christian and the whole village is happy to have this attempt. Everybody knows him!” Recounts Dr. Christian Schmidt after his first visit to Oberaudorf.

Mental Strength

During the next few days Flühr will try to get more and more familiar with both runs of the record and tells a little secret: “The 55.555 will be a brand new challenge for me, which will take me to my personal limits. I have trained a lot, skied a lot, but the main point is that I have mental strength, which I hadn’t had for a long time. I am feeling very good on my skis. The reason is private. - To discover more about the attempt, just click on www.cf-1.net During the attempt the live-ticker from Oberaudorf and Kössen will be activated.”
