Celebrate World Environment Day By Saving Energy In Your Home

ID: 154512

(firmenpresse) - WALSALL, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 06/08/12 -- This week has been celebrating World Environment Day, which took place on 5 June 2012. To show our support, we've come up with some eco-friendly tips to help you become more environmentally aware and save energy and money in your home.

Buy a water butt

Installing a water butt in your garden can save you money, especially if you're a keen gardener. Not only are water butts good for the environment, plants actually prefer rainwater to tap water. And your water butt doesn't only have to be used to give your garden a drink; you can use any rainwater you collect to clean your car and your home's windows.

Turn off your appliances

Did you know that leaving appliances on standby mode can add up to GBP 38 to your annual electricity bill? Always switch off your appliances after use and never overcharge them. Although it's convenient to leave your mobile phone charging overnight, it's better to charge it in the evening, then disconnect once fully charged. And don't forget to turn off the light when you leave a room.

Fill up your freezer

Freezers run more efficiently when they're three quarters or more full. So when provisions are running low, fill up your freezer with bottles of tap water - this will improve its effectiveness and save you energy.

Wash at 30 degrees C

Washing your clothes at 30 degrees C can use up to 40% less electricity than washing at 40 degrees C. And modern washing powders and detergents usually work just as effectively at lower temperatures. Generally, washing machines use the same amount of water and electricity regardless of the size of the load. So always wait until you have a full washing basket to get 'value for money' from your wash.

Lower your thermostat

Try turning your thermostat to a lower temperature setting, especially during the summer months. Reducing your room temperature by just 1 degrees C could save you up to GBP 40 per year on your energy bills.

Check your water temperature

Is your water too hot? Cylinder thermostats shouldn't need to be set higher than 60 degrees C/140 degrees F, so turn yours down and help the environment.

Sort out dripping taps

Check your taps and tighten any which are dripping or leaking. Over the course of one week, a dripping hot water tap can waste enough water to fill half a bath.

Insulate your home

Up to a third of heat loss can occur through the walls of your home. Invest in cavity wall insulation and you could reduce your annual energy bills.
