Canadians encouraged to get involved in a local walk to celebrate living well in spite of Parkinson's

(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 07/10/12 -- Parkinson Society Canada's 22nd annual Parkinson SuperWalk is just around the corner, and on September 8th-9th, 14,000 volunteers and participants in 95 different communities across Canada will walk together to raise $3 million nation-wide. Parkinson SuperWalk is Parkinson Society Canada's largest fundraising event and since its inaugural walk in 1990 led by a small group of committed volunteers in Toronto, the nation-wide event has raised over $25 million for education, support services, research, and advocacy on behalf of Canadians living with Parkinson's.

Blair Sigurdson, 51, knows first-hand how the money raised each year helps people with Parkinson's and their families. Diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson's disease in the summer of 2011, Blair did not let his diagnosis get him down for long. His positive and take-charge attitude led him to Parkinson Society Manitoba's exercise program, to which Blair credits the start of his new life journey.

"One of the amazing things about Parkinson Society Canada is not just the wealth of information they provide, but the people you meet," said Blair Sigurdson, co-founder of the Young Onset support group and captain of the . "The support and encouragement I have received from the other members has been tremendous and has helped guide me through my first year of diagnosis," he adds.

Parkinson's is a neurological disease for which there is no cure. It is estimated that there are more than 100,000 people living with Parkinson's disease across the country(i). Canadians are encouraged to get involved in their community. Parkinson SuperWalk is a celebration of life, family and support and invites Canadians with Parkinson's to share their victory over adversity and their ability to lead productive lives. Everyone who participates is a SuperWalk hero.

This year, Blair, his wife Karren, daughter Jenna, son Tyler and dog Ruby, will be participating in their first Parkinson SuperWalk. Upon learning of her father's diagnosis, 10 year old Jenna sprang into action and started fundraising. With a hand-written speech and a smile that will melt your heart, Jenna has raised more than $2500 over the past month, far surpassing her original goal of $500, and she .

"As soon as I heard about Parkinson SuperWalk, I knew I had to get involved," said Jenna. "Not only do I want to raise money to help find a cure for my dad, but I also want other people with Parkinson's to have the same kind of support he has."
