Governor General to Visit Saskatchewan on the Occasion of the 100th Anniversary Celebration of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 10/05/12 -- Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston will visit Saskatchewan from October 9 to 11, 2012. During their visit to the province, they will attend official functions and events in Prince Albert, Hatchet Lake Denesuline First Nation, and Regina.
"Saskatchewan is quickly becoming known as a province of opportunity and a leader in so many sectors," said His Excellency. "Sharon and I are pleased to attend the ceremony marking the centennial of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building. We are looking forward to meeting with people who are creating even more opportunity in the future, and speaking with them about their potential as community leaders."

Discussion with Students from Prince Albert
His Excellency will host a discussion with over 400 students in grades 7 and 8 from six area schools on the role and responsibilities of the governor general of Canada. During the discussion, students will ask His Excellency questions about his constitutional role; his responsibilities in representing Canada at home and abroad, and as commander-in-chief; about recognizing excellence and achievement, and about how he brings Canadians together, from coast to coast to coast.
In preparation for this discussion, students will use Eduzone, a new online tool designed for teachers, educators and students across Canada. Eduzone provides educational and multimedia resources about the governor general's role and the history of the position. Her Excellency Sharon Johnston will meet with staff from the Ranch Ehrlo Society and participate in an equine assisted training exercise with at-risk youth.

Meeting with the Prince Albert Grand Council
His Excellency will be greeted by Grand Chief Ron Michel for a meeting with 12 chiefs and eight senators from the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC). The discussion will allow for members of the PAGC to share with His Excellency the challenges they face within the community.
The PAGC focuses on the protection and implementation of the Treaties signed by First Nations and the Crown in right of Great Britain in 1876. The council is also committed to supporting its member First Nations achieve and implement independent, progressive self-governments and to improving the quality of life of their constituents through appropriate and productive social and economic strategies.

Community Event and Presentation of the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
In honour of Their Excellencies' visit, the Mayor of Prince Albert will host an event during which His Excellency will address community members and present the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award to three recipients. Created in 1995, the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award recognizes living Canadians and permanent residents who have made a significant, sustained, unpaid contribution to their community, in Canada or abroad. She will then proceed to Schaller College, where she will attend a performance by the Pow Wow Club, and tour the facility. On World Sight Day, His Excellency will visit the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB). As patron of the CNIB, he will meet with staff and guests and participate in the Ignite Your Senses event where he will sample various dessert flavours with a blindfold or simulator glasses that represent four of the most common eye diseases.
