(firmenpresse) - IQALUIT, NUNAVUT -- (Marketwire) -- 01/08/13 -- Today, the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), and Minister for the Arctic Council, announced federal investments for five projects in Nunavut to help build stronger northern communities.

"Our Government is proud to contribute to projects that will help create sustainable, healthy and prosperous northern communities," said Minister Aglukkaq. "In collaboration with our partners, this investment will improve our community infrastructure and create jobs for Northerners."

Federal funding of over $1.6 million is being provided through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF). The Nunavut projects include upgrades to Iqaluit's water distribution system and Baker Lake's arena ice making capacity, an updated power station in Qikiqtarjuaq as well as renovations to community centers in Chesterfield Inlet and Kugluktuk.

"The City of Iqaluit truly appreciates the support from CanNor for this funding initiative," said Iqaluit Mayor John Graham. "Water Booster Station #1 provides water to the residents of Road to Nowhere, Lakeside and Tundra Ridge subdivisions as well as the Arctic Winter Games Complex. The funding from CanNor will help the City complete the required upgrades to provide adequate drinking water distribution service levels that meet the City's current needs and allow for future expansion."

"Any investment into generation efficiency directly benefits our ratepayers by reducing the amount of fuel used to meet the electricity needs of the Community," said Peter Mackey, President and CEO of Qulliq Energy Corporation.

Investments in these projects are made possible through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF), a national program delivered across Canada over two years to rehabilitate or improve existing community infrastructure. The CIIF will help to achieve the Government of Canada's priorities to promote long-term growth and prosperity in Canada's economy, create jobs, and improve the quality of life of communities.

CanNor is delivering CIIF in Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and Yukon.
