Uninor launched in five new circles in India
(Thomson Reuters ONE) -
(Fornebu, Norway and New Delhi, India - 1 June 2010) Uninor has today launched
its services in five new telecom circles, increasing its coverage to 13 telecom
circles and its population footprint to 900 million people across India. Telenor
holds a 67.25 per cent stake in the company.
Today's launch includes the telecom circles of Mumbai, Maharashtra and Goa,
Gujarat, Kolkata and West Bengal. On launch day, Uninor connections in these
five circles will be available at over 85,000 points of sale through close to
440 distributors and more than 80 exclusive shops. Uninor connections will now
be available at close to 300 000 points of sales across India, increasing the
national retail presence by 40 per cent.
"This is a big day for Uninor as we enter some of the most promising and
competitive markets of India. The battle of Indian telecom will be fought on
innovation, quality and flexibility," said Stein Erik Vellan, Managing Director
of Uninor.
"I am satisfied that Uninor continues its roll-out across India, managing to
keep the momentum from the initial launch in December last year. Covering 13
telecom circles Uninor is about to establish itself as a real pan-Indian mobile
operator," said Sigve Brekke, Executive Vice President of Telenor Group, and
head of Telenor's Asian operations. "The valuable learning Uninor has made from
the circles where it has already launched combined with the positive energy and
optimism in the organization will be important in establishing Uninor as a
preferred provider of mobile services in India," Brekke said.
Entering into two of India's largest metros
The launch also makes Uninor services available in Kolkata and Mumbai, two of
the largest metros in India.
"Metros are demanding markets - often a step ahead both in terms of trends and
expectations. These are also markets that contribute significantly to the
telecom sector revenues. We know these markets will be competitive but I am
confident we will succeed," added Vellan.
The speediest roll-out in India
Eight months after entering into India, Uninor started offering its services in
December 2009 with the biggest ever launch in Indian telecommunications history.
Six months later Uninor adds another five circles providing an attractive
alternative to the young and ambitious Indian population.
