The Manitoba chapter of the Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) is pleased to announce Bill Peters, Manager of Communications with St-Boniface Hospital Research Centre, as the recipient of the 2013 Manitoba Communicator of the Year Award.

Peters developed a campaign for the Canadian Centre for Agri-Food Research in Health and Medicine (CCARM) to build awareness of their work on pulse crops (beans). With a budget of under $1,000 Peters came up with "Consider the Bean" - the creation of a portrait of Rowan Atkinson's TV character "Mr. Bean" out of thousands of beans valued at about $4. The concept resulted in significant local media coverage, and features in newspapers in Regina, Saskatoon, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Montreal.

It didn't stop there. Peters then approached Mr. Bean's Facebook administrators who posted the image and a subsequent video, which resulted in more than 8,000 "likes" and 75,000 views. This new international exposure led to hundreds of references on ag-related websites, and hundreds of re-tweets on Twitter and reposts on Facebook. Peters and his team produced T-shirts, posters and an interactive beans graphic for the CCARM website ().

"It's a great example of how effective communications can be accomplished with creativity and drive," said Jason Permanand, president of CPRS Manitoba. "Bill Peters has done what all good communicators attempt to do - create a buzz and get people talking about your organization in meaningful ways."

"I am tremendously honoured to receive this award on behalf of my colleagues at St-Boniface Hospital Research and the Canadian Centre for Agri-Food Research in Health and Medicine," said Peters. "Our researchers' work is groundbreaking, and their tireless effort to improve the health of people everywhere inspires me every day. The opportunity to creatively promote their work, to make it understandable and accessible to everyone, is very rewarding."

Peters will be presented with the award in Winnipeg at a special luncheon event on Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at The Fort Garry Hotel. Luncheon tickets can be purchased online at .

Both the award recipient and all the highly qualified nominees demonstrated creativity and solid communications strategies. CPRS Manitoba is proud to be able to recognize the best in the profession. The award event is made possible through the generosity of principal sponsor, Marketwired.
