Bill Peters, St-Boniface Hospital Research Centre, Selected as CPRS Manitoba Communicator of the Year

The Manitoba chapter of the Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) is pleased to announce Bill Peters, Manager of Communications with St-Boniface Hospital Research Centre, as the recipient of the 2013 Manitoba Communicator of the Year Award.
Peters developed a campaign for the Canadian Centre for Agri-Food Research in Health and Medicine (CCARM) to build awareness of their work on pulse crops (beans). With a budget of under $1,000 Peters came up with "Consider the Bean" - the creation of a portrait of Rowan Atkinson's TV character "Mr. Bean" out of thousands of beans valued at about $4. The concept resulted in significant local media coverage, and features in newspapers in Regina, Saskatoon, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Montreal.
It didn't stop there. Peters then approached Mr. Bean's Facebook administrators who posted the image and a subsequent video, which resulted in more than 8,000 "likes" and 75,000 views. This new international exposure led to hundreds of references on ag-related websites, and hundreds of re-tweets on Twitter and reposts on Facebook. Peters and his team produced T-shirts, posters and an interactive beans graphic for the CCARM website ().
