Expansion in the UK
Zhone's EFM solution provides extended reach for new Ethernet network
Oakland, CA - April 30, 2013 - Zhone Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZHNE), a global
pioneer in FTTx network access solutions, today announced a new Ethernet in the
First Mile (EFM) deployment with Zen Internet, made possible through a strategic
partnership with Imtech Telecom. Zhone's EFM solution will allow Zen Internet to
expand its service offerings in the United Kingdom, enabling the independent ISP
to provide high quality and affordable Ethernet access to businesses of all
sizes across the U.K.
As bandwidth hungry services such as video, voice and complex applications
continue to flood the market, Zen Internet, headquartered in Rochdale, England,
needed a way to deliver high-quality, affordable Ethernet-based connectivity to
its business and residential customers. To address this, Zen Internet recently
invested approximately £4 million (more than $6 million) in a new network of
local access PoPs, choosing Zhone as a technology partner in the network
expansion because of its proven EFM experience. Using Zhone's EFM technology
with MXK(TM) multi-service access node (MSAN) and ETHX Ethernet access system
products, these new PoPs will provide Zen Internet with 200 Ethernet nodes at
local exchanges in key U.K. business locations, using local access network
provider Openreach to provide local loop access to deliver Ethernet services.
These services will include High Capacity Leased Lines, EFM and Ethernet
delivered using Fiber to the Cabinet (FTTC) technology.
