Noerr continues to grow with substantial increase in revenue
Noerr opens a new office in Brussels and expands Patent Litigation with the
'Noerr Patent Group'
Munich/Frankfurt, 2 May 2013
The international commercial law firm Noerr LLP continued its successful
growth of recent years in 2012 and again achieved, both in Germany and
throughout the law firm, a significant increase in revenue. The law firm
continues to expand its international business and strengthens its European
and technology capacity. Noerr will open its own office in Brussels. Patent
law will be strengthened by cooperation with the prominent patent law firm
Bosch Jehle Patentanwaltsgesellschaft mbH.
Turnover grows to EUR 170 million
Noerr in the past financial year achieved EUR 170.0 million turnover in all
offices. That is 6.7 % more than in 2011 (EUR 159.3 million). The demand
for advisory services also continued to grow in Germany. Turnover increased
by 6.8 % to EUR 135.3 million (2011: EUR 126.7 million). Against the
background of the less dynamic economic development in Central and Eastern
Europe in the financial year 2012, the law firm's turnover in the region
fell slightly. Noerr's total turnover in its Central and Eastern European
offices was EUR 27.1 million, 3.1% less than in the previous year. The
offices in Alicante, London and New York were able to increase their
turnover by 65.9% to EUR 7.6 million.
'2012 was again a very successful year for our law firm' said Dr. Alexander
Ritvay. The legal press also acknowledged this. The European legal magazine
'The Lawyer' selected Noerr as 'European Law Firm of the Year 2012'. The
Co-speaker emphasised that strategic growth areas of the law firm drove the
business: 'Our services in Litigation, Corporate/M&A, Media IP&IT and Tax&Advisory achieved above-average demand.'
Noerr made welcome progress in M&A. 'We have been able to take advantage of
our inter-disciplinary strengths particularly in public takeovers'
emphasised Co-speaker Dr. Tobias Bürgers. Transactions dealt with by Noerr
made up about one third of the German market volume in public M&A in 2012
(source Mergermarket). The most prominent example is the takeover of DKB
Immobilien AG by TAG Immobilien AG. Building on its traditional strength in
Media IP&IT, Noerr also expanded transactions in E-Commerce and acted in
significant transactions such as the sale of trivago to Expedia or the sale
of further shares of Zalando to Kinnevik and JP Morgan. According to
Mergermarket, Noerr in 2012 advised in 50% of the German transactions in
the Internet/E-Commerce market segment.
The transaction business was particularly successful in the real estate
sector. Noerr acted in almost all outstanding major transactions in the
past year in that area including GBW AG on the takeover by a consortium led
by PATRIZIA Immobilien AG, TAG Immobilien AG on the takeover of TLG Wohnen
and Lone Star on the acquisition of TLG Immobilien.
Internationally, the offices in Alicante, London and New York succeeded in
expanding their business significantly. 'We are very satisfied, in
particular London has developed into an important element in our
international strategy' said Ritvay. The business in the offices in Central
and Eastern Europe is more difficult. 'The reduced growth in the region has
been reflected in our business' said Bürgers.
The overall growth is also reflected in the personnel numbers. The number
of professionals rose as of 31 December 2012 by 2.1% to 482 (2011: 472), in
Germany to 341 (2011: 325), an increase of 4.9%. Noerr is one of the most
popular employers for lawyers. In 2012 Noerr took on 81 associates. Noerr
has a total number of staff of 1,073 (2011: 1,041, plus 3.1%), of whom 819
are in Germany (2011: 777, plus 5.4%).
In this year too, Noerr expects an increasing demand in particular in
company law, capital markets law, banking&finance, compliance&investigations, litigation, cartel law and the regulated markets and a
continuation of successful growth. 'We therefore also plan additional
hires' said Bürgers.
Opening of Brussels office
The growing significance of internationalisation of the business and the
increased significance of regulatory issues in client work is taken into
account by the opening of a new office. 'We will open an office in Brussels
in the coming months' said Ritvay.
'The Brussels office has high strategic significance for us as a leading
European law firm' said Bürgers. 'The intensity of regulation is increasing
and increasingly important developments for national law in the individual
states originate from Brussels. The office therefore strengthens not only
our capacity in cartel and subvention law but also our services for
companies in regulated industries such as banking, insurance and energy.
Cartel lawyer and Noerr partner Alexander Birnstiel will build up the new
office. Birnstiel, together with Holger Schmitz, heads the Noerr Regulatory&Governmental Affairs Department. Advising clients in the regulated
industries - in particular in company transactions - is among the core
services of our law firm.
Strengthening of technology capacity
Noerr has significantly strengthened its technology capacity. Since 1 May,
the law firm cooperates with the patent law firm Bosch Jehle with which the
partners have agreed exclusive cooperation in patent law. For the clients,
this combines the law firm's patent law expertise with the technical
expertise of the patent lawyers of Bosch Jehle. For Noerr, partners Dr.
Georg Jahn and Dr. Ralph Nack direct the cooperation.
